Happy World Volleyball Day
It's our favourite past time, and we spend lots of time planning our clubs and fixtures, but how well do we know the sport we all love so much?
Volleyball was invented by William G Morgan in 1895, and later became an Olympic sport in 1964.
Volleyball was first called "mintonette." The name was changed after educator Alfred S. Halstead suggested it, pointing out that the game’s back-and-forth ball action deserved a more fitting name.
The sport was made to be an indoor game where players stay active without lots of running or rough contact. Morgan wanted something fun, physical, and a little less intense than other sports.
Beach volleyball kicked off in California in 1930, with the first tournament happening in 1948 at Santa Monica's Will Rogers Beach. It went global in 1986 with the first world championship in Rio, and joined the Olympics in 1996.
Have fun celebrating this momentous day with your clubs!
